Strength Training
Lifting weights (free weights, machines, or elastic type bands) is a
terrific way to improve your health both physically and mentally.  Most
people, myself included, experience increased energy and have a
feeling of wellness after a vigorous workout. Our muscles support our
frame - and stronger muscles use less effort to maintain posture and
perform typical daily activities. More over we are less likely to be
injured when our muscles and connective tissue are stronger and
healthier. Another benefit is that working out helps a person to look
and feel healthier.

If you are in my office, you probably have pain somewhere in your
body.  You may be concerned as to whether or not you can and
should work out. Talk with me and we’ll discuss any temporary
limitations you might have to make in your exercise program. Often
we can modify your work out routine slightly so you are able to
continue working out.
Exercise has many therapeutic values, and fear of pain can cause unnecessary inactivity. So it is important
to learn to "read" your body and know when you need to stop or modify an activity.
If at any point during
strength training you feel pain – STOP.

Strengthening exercises help increase muscle tone, muscle endurance, and improve the quality of
muscles. Adequate strength of abdominal and back muscles helps stabilize the spine, allow proper spinal
movement, and makes it easier to maintain correct posture. Strong hip and leg muscles are important to
perform proper lifting techniques and body mechanics.

Exercise is a vital part of improving and maintaining normal, comfortable back function. It is important to
exercise regularly so you can maintain your fitness level. Regular exercise is important to prevent back
pain and injury. A program of strengthening, stretching and aerobic exercises will improve your overall
fitness level. Research has shown that people who are physically fit are more resistant to back injuries and
pain, and recover quicker when they do have injuries, than those who are less physically fit. In addition,
you should consider maintaining an average weight for your height.

If you have thought about starting an exercise program, but don’t know where to begin, I’d be more than
happy to guide you in the right direction. I can write up a workout routine based upon your specific goals,
and how much time you are willing to commit to training. Many people don’t realize that the routine should
be different depending upon whether the goal is muscle toning, building bulk, increasing strength, or
increasing power.

Likewise if you are lifting weights and have a question about how to better target a certain muscle, or
maybe you just want to revitalize a stale routine…ask me!  Whether you’re working out in the Total Fitness
Center, some other gym, or at home I’d be happy to help you reach your fitness goals.
